May 2013 - Spring Cleaning, Allie's Playschool Graduation, a Little Soccer, and Snow

Moving into our home, we knew that we didn't necessarily love the hedges out front. We figure we'll take them out sometime, but it isn't a priority. When talking to a neighbor, they mentioned that the plants climbing up the posts on the railing in the front got really pretty blooms in the spring and that we shouldn't take them down. I'm glad they told us that, because they were right. Ends up we have some beautiful Clematis.

The Lower portion had so many blooms - another reason to remove our hedges some day.

Higher up on the Clematis vine, there was a little bird's nest. Allie had spotted it and wanted to see if there were any eggs in it. I didn't think there would be, so when I finally lifted her up to see and she said, "Mom, theirs an egg and some fuzzy stuff in it," I was surprised. So I climbed up and found she was right. There was a very young baby bird and another egg.

With the spirit of Spring cleaning, I decided to wash windows. I started indoors and then moved outside. The girls were really excited to go with me. As I washed the windows, I found that the trim and shutters by the windows were really dirty. I enlisted my trusty helpers to wash the bottom portion of the shutters. They had a lot of fun cleaning. I wish they had that much fun cleaning up inside.

Sadly, Allie's playschool ended in May. They had a cute graduation for the kids. It was as all graduations should be, nice and short. It was also much more fun than most graduations. They started out with floor time. The kids sat on a little carpet in a circle. Siblings were welcome, so Rachel joined Allie. They then sang some songs for the visitors.

After circle time, the kids went out into the hall to get their caps. Then they called the children in one at a time and said something special about each kid. I believe they commented on Allie being eager to learn. Sadly, I was trying to get the camera to record, but it didn't work and I didn't catch it completely. They each received a certificate and a little baggie with goodies.

We thought that everything was over, but they had one more surprise for the kids, a piñata. Siblings got to take a turn, too.

Rachel's Turn

Allie was a pretty proud sister. She kept telling the teachers, "This is my sister, Rachel." And then while other kids were taking turns hitting the piñata, Allie was protective of Rachel, making sure she didn't get to close. She didn't want her to get hit.

We got to enjoy some beautiful days in the backyard.

Spring soccer was somewhat of a bust this year. Due to rain and storms that moved through, several of Allie's games were cancelled. I think she only played in three games. But she still had fun each time.

Although we had some beautiful days, we also got some rain and SNOW! We could not believe that we got snow in May. It was reminiscent of Rexburg.

Sadly, when our grass started turning green again, we realized that our yard was mostly weeds. We sprayed it, and it worked a little, but we also did some good old fashioned weeding. The girls helped for a little while.

When pulling the weeds out, it seemed to be scaring the worms out of the ground. I don't remember for sure, but I think there were at least 15 worms that came out of the ground in the little 6 x 6 ft square we weeded. When they would come up, Allie would transport them to a shady area in the grass so that they wouldn't dry out too much.
